How to hang curtains

Curtains are beautiful in any room and a must for a truly great-looking space. Rooms without curtains can look bare and cold, as curtains bring a feeling of cosiness to a space. There are many different types of curtains to choose from, and a wide range of hanging methods. Here are some of our best tips for when you want to hang a new pair of curtains at home!

Once you've chosen the perfect curtains, the next step is to hang them in a way that shows the window and the curtains' design at their best. Choosing the right hanging method and installing curtains can seem a little tricky, but if you understand the process, it doesn't have to be. As long as you follow these simple steps, hanging curtains will be much easier.

  1. The very first decision you should make is which room you're going to hang your curtains in, and then you can assess which hanging system is most suitable. If you already own the curtains you're going to use, it's important to pick the best hanging method. Some curtains require a curtain rod, for example eyelet curtains, while other curtains such as multiband curtains fit on either rods or rails.

To hang curtains with a rail: Hanging curtains from a ceiling-mounted rail creates added impact, as it enables you to use full-length curtains to make rooms and windows seem bigger. A rail can easily be fixed to the ceiling using suitable brackets. Measure the exact position you want the rails to be in and mark the ceiling. Pre-drill the necessary holes, insert the wall plugs and the rail brackets, and the hang the rail. Finally, place the rail hooks so you can hang the curtain, and finish up with curtain stops at the ends. If you want to combine layers of curtains, you can choose a system with more tracks or attach two rails in parallel.

Hanging curtains with curtain rods: Curtain rods are suitable for a wide range of rooms, and give you the added flexibility of choosing different styles of rod end or curtain stop, allowing you to personalise the look of your arrangement. A curtain rod is attached to the wall with suitable brackets. Measure the position of the wall brackets in relation to the window. After you've measured and marked, drill the necessary holes and screw in the wall brackets. Depending on the wall material, you might need a wall plug before adding the brackets. Once you've set up both wall brackets, it's easy to just thread the curtain on the rod and place it in the brackets.

  1. Measure the depth of the window sill and how far out from the wall you want the curtain to sit. This allows you to position the curtain rail or rod at the correct distance from the wall. It's also important to consider the width of the window so that you can put the curtains in the best position. With any hanging system, it's important to give the window enough space to breathe so that it's unobscured by the curtains when they're pulled back. A good rule of thumb is to place the wall bracket or the rail so that it extends about 10 cm out from the window on both sides. If you choose a curtain rod instead, we also recommend positioning it about 10 cm above the window.

  1. Once you've selected the hanging method, you need to check the length and model of the curtains to make sure they fit. When measuring curtains, it's easiest to start from where you're going to attach your curtain rod or rail so that you know you've got the correct length for when they're installed. It can be a good idea to add a few extra inches in any case.

  1. You also need to check if you need any particular curtain accessories.  Do you need to buy a certain type of rail hooks or is the curtain threaded onto the rod via a fabric channel on the back of the curtain? Check your curtains for any special fastenings, hooks or other accessories.

  2. If you're buying a pair of ready-made curtains, it's better to choose a pair that's too long than a pair that's too short. It's easy to adjust the length of a curtain with a fabric glue strip and iron if you find they're too long, but if it's too short, it's very difficult to fix.

  3. When the curtain rod or roof rail is screwed in place, the curtains are the correct length and hung, all that remains is to sit back, relax and enjoy the cosy feeling your curtains bring to the room.
